Finnish Sergeant-Major EngineersThis soldier is in the Finnish Army and is in the Engineering Corps. The branch of service is recognised by the violet patch with the grey border. The soldier's rank is represented by the four yellow/gold stripes, he is a sergeant major. He is wearing the light weight gray speckled tunic, which had a fly front and two breast pockets with button down flaps. This
tunic was developed before the war and came from the model of 1932, the m/32. In 1936 it was simplified, by giving it straight cuffs and a more simple shape to the chest pockets. It was intended for summer use and became known as the model of 1936, or 'M/36 summer tunic'.
The other tunic worn was the woollen m/36 tunic, designed as the standard uniform of the Finnish Army.
The helmet is a Swedish design, the m/37. It was adopted for the Finnish Army and became the model 1940, manufactured in Finland. This Finn M/40 was an advanced ball shaped helmet, which offered increased ballistic protection over many other helmets at the time. The suspension system consisted of three leather padded section, very similar to the WW1 German type.
He is wearing some very basic equipment. Over his right shoulder he is carrying his 'bread-bag' or small haversack, in this photo only the strap can be seen. A pair of German made binoculars are hung from his neck on a thin leather strap. He is carrying a single set of three ammunition pouches on his waist belt, along with a private purchased local knife.
