The machine gun crew use the Vickers machine gun, the machine gunner is assisted by a Number 2, who assists with the feeding of ammunition to the machine gun, another two men will be nearby with extra ammunition. The Light Horse units used both the Vickers and the Hotchkiss machine guns. The Lewis Gun was used but not to the same extent as the others. This soldier is using the range finder, possibly made by Barr & Stroud, and sitting on a small metal tripod. This was an essential piece of equipment for both machine guns and artillery pieces, both of which could be used to fire over considerable distance, and the accuracy of the projectile was essential, especially when shooting over the heads of your own troops. Most armies used a devise similar to this, and the Turks would be found with an almost identical item.
