Albert Vinall Diary |
|
Albert
was like many other young, courageous Australian men, enlisting to
fight for his country. He, also, was meticulous in keeping
memorabilia, almost everything he could have been given, bus and
train tickets, postcards, letters, photographs, etc. Sadly, he
died a few years ago before I could talk with him at length.

Enemy aeroplane came over after breakfast. Anti aircraft guns did some
good shooting. The whole Brigade is camped under palms. No tents so we
are living something similar to Gallipoli again. SCHOGIELD, STEWART,
SCOTT and self have a shanty made of palm leaves half way up the bank of
the Hod under a palm. From here we can overlook the whole Regiment.

A suspected spy has been seen answering this description:-
Man, dressed as Australian wearing drill tunic and slacks, felt hat
turned up on left side, badge under right rim, brown boots, no belt,
clean shaven, dark hair and complexion, age about 30. Stout, big hands
wearing rheumatic ring on third finger left hand. Bay horse long tail
and mane, may be wearing sergeants stripes, and states he is lost and
belongs to some other unit. Carries maps.
A party of Bedouins rode onto one of our cossack posts at WILLEGHA about
1815 hours the other night, and made off on being challenged. Post
opened fire killing one camel AAA. They escaped and A troop pursued them
for some distance.
The P and O boat carrying mail from Australia "ARABIA", was
sunk a few days ago an hour out of Pt. SAID. Two lives lost.
