Don't shoot",
he cried, "They are Indian."
And he was a German and the soldiers were as much Indian as I am.
They have learnt our bugle calls, but our boys merely cheer now when
they hear what they know is a "false call".

1915 Sgt.F. G. Garrett, 3rd Australian Light Horse Regiment
A
colourful and very interesting account of one soldiers experiences
during the Great War....transcribed exactly & painstakingly over
18 months.
A must to read! Not just the diary - photo album,
glossary of fellow soldiers names, links, maps and
more..................read about Galipoli, Egypt, the Germans, the
courage and tenacity of many who fought in the Great War. Here's
just a few of the daily diary entries.............
At
10.00 am this morning we all lined the front of our tents and were
inspected by the Doc, "Whats wrong with you?"
"How long have you been
here?"
"Put out your tongue."
We are getting Lime juice 4 times per week now. The Doc is becoming
alarmed at the size of our morning sick parade....more
Marched
out on desert and were presented with Xmas presents by ladies. List
in rear of book. We merely wore side-arms with infantry belt to distinguish us from the rest of the
Brigade who were mostly reinforcements.
We held the place of honour being
first to receive our presents. Afterwards the Colonel addressed us
referring to us as campaigners and seasoned veterans.....more
About
Fred Garret's
Diary
The
diary is "1915 Letts Diary" , physical size approx 2.5" by
5.5" (12 by 9cm) and
written in pencil. One of
the most difficult tasks in transcribing has been identifying
the dates and days. Not only did Fred carry forward an
interesting account that captured his imagination from one day
to the next, but used the one diary for 2 years instead
of one, hence some pages in his diary refer to many
different related dates.
The document the web pages have
been converted from consisted of over 65,000 words on 113 A4
pages - quite a lot for such a little book! Identifying this
has been mind boggling but.....well worth the finished
decipher. I have had many late nights, laughs & headaches.
I hope you enjoy Fred's account
of the war as much as I have
