Commemoration Scroll

This scroll was sent to the next-of-kin of soldiers who perished in the 'Great War'.

It reads:

"He whom this scroll commemorates was numbered among those who, at the call of King and Country, left all that was dear to them, endured hardness, faced danger, and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self-sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom. Let those who come after see to it that his name be not forgotten."

This particular scroll refers to Private Edward John COLBERT. He was born on the 16th of December, 1893. He enlisted as a Private in the 10th Infantry Battalion, (South Australia) of the Australian Imperial Forces, his regimental number was 3471. He was killed in action in FRANCE on the 15th of April 1917.
Unfortunately the Officer in Charge of Base Records of the Australian Imperial Forces was unable to advise his next-of-kin of the site of his burial until May, 1921.

He was buried in the Moeuvres Communal Cemetery Extension, (British) 10 miles East North East of BAPAUME.
