Two 'drivers'.
Private William WINCHESTER & Private Thomas Terrence REID, posed for this photograph when they were serving in the 32nd Battalion, A.I.F. at Wardreckques, BELGIUM. The photo was taken on the 25th August, 1917.
Both men were drivers of the 32nd Battalion's transport, and were specialists at driving wagons and careing for the horses they used. Their uniform varies slightly from the infantryman's. The tunic is the same, while the breeches are designed for their mounted duties. They are not required to carry the web equipment, their equipment is the same as other mounted troops, the leather bandolier equipment, Pattern 1903. Neither do these men wear wool puttees, instead they wear leather leggings.
William WINCHESTER survived the War and eventually died at the age of 81 years, at Terowie, South Australia.
Thomas 'Tom' REID, was initially from Kapunda, South Australia, he also survived the War, and lived in South Australia until 17th, Feburary, 1968 when he died at the Repatriation Hospital.
