The Quack Page

Due to the ever increasing number of enquires I am receiving for information about militaria I thought perhaps a good idea would to have a page where anyone could leave a question, answer or comment about militaria. I will still answer emails and also try to answer any questions placed on this page. If you feel you would like to reply to any of the messages please feel free to by clicking here

Quack is automatically updated by my Web provider as soon as you send your message

Hello, I have recently aquired a NAZI GERMAN NAVY SOFT CAP and I\'m stumped of it\'s identification. I have been told several variations of what it might or might not be. If anyone knows how to properly identify the cap, please email me. I\'ll describe it as best I can: IT IS A BLACK CLOTH SOFT \"OFFICER\'S\" TYPE HAT. IT HAS THE TOP EAGLE \& SWASTICA EMBLEM AND A SILVER COLORED OAK LEAF \& ACCORN CLUSTER UNDER THE EAGLE. THE RADIANT/CIRCULAR STYLE CENTER DESIGN OF THE CLUSTER HAS A RED DOT IN IT. THE EAGLE HAS AN \"IRON CROSS\" ON IT. THE BAND HAS EMBROIDERED SWASTICAS AND, WHAT I THINK, LOOKS LIKE TRIDENTS. ALSO, THE EAGLE EMBLEM HAS ANCHORS ON IT. THE INSIDE OF THE HAT HAS THE DIAMOND SHAPED HAT MAKERS LOGO. IT IS A CLEAR CELLULOID LABEL WITH A GOLD COLORED IRON CROSS CONTIAINING A SWASTICA WITHIN IT. THERE IS ALSO GERMAN WRITING WHICH IS PROBABLY THE HAT MAKER. THERE IS NO NAME WRITTNE ANYWHERE ON THE HAT. \(THAT WOULD HAVE HEPLED A LOT!!!\) I THINK THAT IT MAY BE A SUBMARINER\'S HAT BECAUSE OF IT\'S SMALLER SIZE THAN OTHER NAZI SOFT OFFICER\'S HATS I\'VE SEEN. I WAS TOLD A DIFFERENT STORY BY A MAN AT THE SALE WHERE I PURCHASED IT. IT WAS AT THE ESTATE OF A WW LL AMERICAN NAVAL OFFICER. THE FELLOW ADVISED THAT THIS MAN HAD AN \"OLD BATTLE FLAG\" AND OTHER THINGS OFF OF THE SISTER SHIP TO THE BISMARK. THIS I KNOW TO BE THE TURPITZ, WHICH WAS SUNK IN PORT FOR REPAIR I BELIEVE. I ALSO DID GET A NAZI FLAG OUT OF THE HOUSE TOO. THE FLAG IS A COMMON LOOKING TYPE OF THE PERIOD. IT IS APPROX. 3X4 FT. AND IS MAINLY RED. IT HAS THE WHITE CIRCLE AND THE BLACK SWASTICA IN THE CENTER. I CANNOT FIND ANY NUMBERS OR MARKNINGS ON THE FLAG. THE MATERIAL AND STITCHING LOOK CORRECT THOUGH. Can anyone tell me if a hat could be placed to a certian ship, or even if it is a different variety between surface and submarine warfare. Thanks a Lot.

With regard to the \"Brinton\" brass compasses that are out there on E-Bay,these appear to me to be repros of the BRUNTON, part of the tip off is the lack of serial number on the body of the compass.\ \ Regards\ \ Matt

I have the exact same question as dsaucier@columbus.rr.com. What\'s the story on a brass compass marked BRINTON COMPASS THOS. J. EVANS, ESQ LONDON MKI 1914, and where I can find instructions on how to use all the functions\? Some internet searching has shown me that Brunton seems to be the big name in compasses, and the one-vowel difference leads me to believe a Brinton must be a knockoff.

I recently traded for a 2nd issue Luftwaffe white handled dagger in good shape. The only markings on the blade are kissing cranes. And the aluminum wire that that is wraped around the white handle is not twisted like most I have seen, it\'s of the plain strait aluminum variety. Any information about this dagger would be greatly appreciated.

I have a rifle I am trying to identify. I believe it is German. It has two shotgun barrels \(side by side\) and what looks like a barrel for a 22 down below, centered. It has duo hammers and triggers. It has the word EICHSTATT on one side of the barrel and MAX GRVNY on the opposite side of the barrel. I also have some original photographs taken in Buchenwald, Germany. They show prisoners hanging, shot and starved to death at this Nazi death camp. Any info would be appreciated.

I have a German sword marked E.F. Horster, Solingen. It is brass no engraving, with blued metal scabbard. It also has what I believe to be an ordnance code \( Wa253\) stamped on all parts of the sword and scabbard. Above the Wa253 is what appears to be an airplane or an eagle. Any information on how to obtain what division of the German military this was issued to, or how to find out more about the sword would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have a brass compass marked \"Brinton Compass, Ross Evans, London, 1814 1841, MK1\". It has Ross Evans signiture engraved on the inside on the base. I could use some information on the approximate age and origin of the compass. I would also appreciate any advise on how to use the different functions of the compass and what it was used for originally. It\'s obvious the compass was used for more than just finding your way back home. I am a Boy Scout Leader and I collect compasses to show the Scouts the different types and their uses.

I am research Curator for the Thurles Famine and War Museum here in Tipperary, Ireland. When we started this Museum the reference data available on the market amounted to heaps of hard to get books and articles on the relevant topics. I have spent the last 8 years compiling the Book of Marks. At the moment it contains 280 A4 pages of codes, marks, and other reference material. In this book there is not one line of irrelevant data. Everything is alphabetically and numerically listed. There are no sections it is just one long list from .270 on ammunition to ZY on ammunition. Basically the book contains the most up to date references on; Bayonet recognition by Muzzel ring diameter and blade length. Ammunition headstamps from most parts of the world. Ammunition identification by case length and case type. British regimental markings on bayonet hilts. Grenade marks. Artillery shell/casing marks. Proof marks and other gun markings. Some sword marks. WW2 German ordnance and Waa codes, German medal/badge markings including RZM and L codes. Russian, American, Japanese and British Arsenal Marks. British Fuze marks up to number 160. And many other inspectors marks, view marks, prefixes, suffixes, too many to list separately. I am looking for a publisher to print this book for me. Any ideas? Tom Burnell

It's 245mm long 85mm wide at the base and 75mm wide at the top (give or take the odd dent!) It's obviously 75mm calibre but does anyone know what from, and is it Waffen SS ??
