The Naval coat and hat are part of the kit of the Australian Naval Captain Surgeon CAMPBELL. He served during WW2.

The hat is a standard Naval officer's peaked cap. The hat is made of black wool, with a black wool peak. There is an accessory for the hat, which is a white cotton cover for the top of the hat. This cover has a split in the rear and a small button to help it close up over the top of the hat. The hat has a black leather chinstrap, similar to the Australian Army's brown slouch hat chin strap. This strap is held to the hat by two black wool covered buttons. The peak of the hat is also covered in wool and has gold wire leaves embroidered to the front of the peak. There is a detatchable black band about the crown, and to it is attatched a Naval Officer's badge. The badge is a gold wire embroidered wreath around a silver fouled anchor. Above the wreath is a gold Kings crown. The interior of the hat is lined in purple silk, and was made by "Sandhurst, KITCHENER & CO. Pty. Ltd. 9 Hunter St. SYDNEY"

The coat is one of many that were owned and used by Capt. Campbell. All his coats and trousers were made by the Australian Government, and are simply marked with a label "M.TX", he has also added his own details. The clothing is made in three different grades of wool, ranging from a heavy melton 'doe skin' wool to a light weight material. The coats are in the 'reefer' jacket style, and have the badges of rank on the cuffs of each sleeve. These rank stripes are four bands of gold tape with the uppermost band having a loop. In the centre of each loop is the capital letter 'R', this shows Campbell is a Reserves Officer. Between each of the gold bands is a background colour of red. The red denotes him as being in the branch of Surgeons. There are four pockets in the coat, two at waist level, without flaps, and another at the left breast, on the inside right breast is another small pocket. The eight gold buttons at the front of the tunic are made by 'Stokes and Sons, MELBOURNE'. On the left side of the coat the buttons button flat onto the tunic, whereas the buttons on the right have loop at the rear so when they are sewn to the coat they stand higher than those on the the left. This is so that when the coat is buttoned up, both buttons sit off the coat at the same level. The buttons of tunic have the standard Royal Australian Naval pattern, displaying the word Australia and the crown and fouled anchor. The coats are all lined in a cotton fabric. There are seven ribbons on the left breast, near the left shoulder so that the collar will not interfere with them.
